472 Million Smartphones Sold Globally In 2011
According to Gartner, nearly half a billion smartphones were sold in 2011 which reflects an increase of 58% when compared to 2010. With 472 million smartphone units sold in 2011, the rate of smartphone penetration is rapidly growing which means that more users will be able to receive mobile advertisements. Of the total number of mobile devices sold last year, smartphone purchases made up about one-third of all mobile device sales. Apple was evidently the smartphone leader in terms of sales with their astonishing 37 million iPhones sold in the last quarter of 2011. Surprisingly, the China based, low-end mobile phone manufacturer ZTE had the second fastest growth rate after Apple.
Apple Supplier Foxconn Raises Worker Wages
In a statement earlier today, the Taiwan based manufacturing company Foxconn said that it would restructure base pay for junior workers upping their salaries 16-25%. According to reports by Reutuers, the manufacturing giant has also implemented a system where junior workers can also earn more by passing a technical examination. Foxconn stated that since 2010 workers have received three raises while also making it clear that their salaries had already far exceeded the minimum wage set by all of the local governments. Earlier this week Foxconn received much scrutiny from The New York Times as they attacked the Chinese manufacturer for having horrible working conditions. After the article surfaced, Apple CEO Tim Cook called for an independent investigation executed by the Fair Labor Association which is a partially funded by Apple. Many are suspicious of the new reports from the FLA due to the fact that the president had praised the conditions at Foxconn, saying after onlya few days that the facilities were “first-class” and “really not a sweatshop.” The details of the FLA’s investigation is to be posted on their website within the coming months.
C3Nano’s Flexible Screens Raises $6.7 Million
At the end of last year we mentioned Samsung’s prototype phone which included a flexible screen. C3Nano, the company responsible for those flexible screens just announced that they had received $6.7 million in funding. C3Nano’s unique OLED display contains carbon hybrid-based ink and films and act as a transparent conductor. Ultimately this means that these high-tech screens will be high performing, inexpensive, and robust. C3Nano feels that their business strategy is strong since their flexible screen solution drops their material and process cost through simplicity of design. The company has officially stated that they have already begun business with paying customers in Korea and Japan.
Google To Launch Android 5.0 Early Due To Windows 8
As Android users wait upon the updating of their smartphone’s os to Ice Cream Sandwich, momentum for the operating system is slowing down – especially with the much anticipated Windows 8. According to Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, it is rumored that Google might launch Android 5.0 a.k.a Jelly Bean as early as the second quarter of 2012. Many believe that the company might even debut the new os at the Google I/O conference this year. It is reported that Android 5.0 was created in order to bring more emphasis on tablet features as well as offer a dual-boot functionality between Android and Google’s Chrome OS. It is further rumored that the company might also attempt to bring Android 5.0 to the notebooks and netbooks.

Google Leverages Patents Received From Motorola Acquisition
According to Bloomberg, some time next week, the U.S. Department of Justice is expected to approve Google’s $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility. With the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, Google is said to be receiving over 17,000 mobile patents in addition to all of the manufacturer’s mobile phone assets. In the past, Google has been opposed to patent litigation which is why many have assumed that they would only use the patents to defend against legal attacks. However, in a letter sent to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Google clearly stated that they would endorse Motorola’s royalty demands of up to 2.25% for the use of Motorola’s technology which includes Apple’s iPhone. If manufacturers currently utilizing Motorola’s patented technologies refuse to pay the 2.25% royalty fee, Google has threatened to file an injunction. Why the sudden hypocrisy? Hopefully Google will release a statement soon.
iPad 3 Coming Sooner Than Expected
Thursday, AllThingsD reported that the 3rd generation iPad would be introduced some time in the first week of March. Although there has been no official date of the new iPads hitting store shelves, experts estimate that the new tablet will be available to consumers approximately a week or so after Apple’s media event. It is rumored that the iPad 3 will be similar to the iPad2 in terms of design but will feature a faster processing chip, improved graphics, as well as a 2048 x 1536 Retina Display.
Mobile Users Google During Super Bowl
This year during Super Bowl XLVI, 41% of searches relevant to the game’s advertisements came from mobile devices. During the big game, Google monitored search results and found that consumers were more likely to search for information regarding brands they had just seen on TV. The search engine giant’s study also included how smartphone searches measured up to tablet searches. Comparing Super Bowl web searches to web searches logged a week before the game, mobile searches made from smartphones increased by 2700% while tablet web usage increased by 970%. These findings in addition to trending keywords relative to commercials aired during the Super Bowl prove that a mobile-first strategy is not only necessary, but very effective.
Facebook Looks To Monetize Mobile
With its recent IPO filing, Facebook has received much speculation over how the company will generate revenues from mobile users. It is rumored that the company will begin serving ads on its mobile app as well as its mobile version web site. According to the Financial Times, the company is expected to launch mobile ads called “featured stories” within the next few weeks. Essentially, Facebook will be placing relevant ads inside of your news feeds taking an approach similar to Twitter’s promoted tweets. Although users will more than likely be displeased with Facebook’s decision to run ads across their mobile platforms, analysts say that it will not be bothersome enough that users will stop using the social platform.

In recent months there has been a lot of discussion around whether or not multi-screen advertising is effective. The concept behind multi-screen advertising is displaying the same or similar ad on different devices with the intent of reinforcing the message to the consumer.
